the sages who wrote it down

three names sit on almost every vedic astrology book ever printed. only one of them is a person we can really place.

i.varahamihira is the one we can date — mid-500s ce, and he wrote down where the greek material came from.
ii.parashara is the bigger name, but the book we have under his name is far younger than the tradition claims.
iii.jaimini's system is real and still used. the dating is genuinely unknown.
iv.none of that makes the system worthless. it makes it a tradition, edited by hand, for a very long time.

varahamihira — the one we can actually place

If you want a real historical person, start here. Varahamihira worked in the middle of the sixth century and is the best-documented figure in early Indian astrology.

He wrote in pairs — a long version and a short version of each subject. The Brihat Jataka on reading a birth chart. The Brihat Samhita on omens, weather, architecture, gemstones, and a hundred other practical things. And the Panchasiddhantika, which summarises five earlier systems of astronomy.

That last one is where it gets interesting. One of the five, the Romaka Siddhanta — the "doctrine of the Romans" — runs on Greek geometry. It uses the epicycle model for the Sun and Moon, Hipparchus's length of the year, and the Metonic cycle. This is not a vague influence. It is a Greek astronomical system, written up in Sanskrit, sitting in an Indian textbook.

Varahamihira's writing carries around thirty-five Greek technical terms in Sanskrit dress. And he was open about where they came from. He wrote that the Greeks were well trained in the sciences and should be honoured like sages — while in the same breath treating them as ritually impure and outside the fold.

That single ambivalent sentence is the clearest acknowledgement of the debt anywhere in the tradition. He knew exactly what he had borrowed.

His usual dates, 505–587, are both inferred rather than recorded. The 505 comes from a date he mentions in his own book — and scholars argue about whether that is his birth or the year he wrote it. The 587 comes only from a commentary written centuries later. "Active in the mid-sixth century" is the claim that actually holds.

He also cites Aryabhata by name, which gives us a chain: Aryabhata born 476, Varahamihira working around 550, both drawing on Greek material that arrived earlier still.

parashara — the biggest name, and the youngest book

The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra is the backbone of modern Vedic practice. The sixteen divisional charts come from it. The planetary yogas come from it. Above all, Vimshottari dasha — the timing system that decides which chapter of your life you are in — comes from it.

Tradition places Parashara deep in the Vedic past, generations back, father of the sage who compiled the Mahabharata. The text itself does not support that, and the evidence against it is unusually clean.

The first problem is a missing book. Around the year 900, a scholar named Bhattotpala wrote what is still the greatest commentary on Indian astrology. He quoted widely — he had access to a large library and used it. On Parashara he recorded something awkward: he could not obtain a copy. Varahamihira had referred to a Parashara three centuries earlier. Bhattotpala, hunting for it, came up empty.

The second problem is when it reappeared. Manuscripts only surfaced in the early twentieth century. A partial version was printed in 1905. Another editor, working in 1944, stated openly in his own preface that he had changed and removed material. The first English translation came in 1962. The version most people buy today, published in 1984, has 97 chapters — and other printings do not match it.

The third problem is that no ancient commentary exists. For a text this central, that is strange. Every other major work in the tradition attracted commentaries within a few centuries. The oldest known commentary on this one was written in the twentieth century.

Scholars place the core of it somewhere around the seventh to eighth centuries. The dating is partly circumstantial and partly textual: the book borrows from Varahamihira, which means it comes after him, not centuries before.

None of this means the system inside it is worthless. Vimshottari dasha works or it doesn't on its own merits, and a great deal of practical knowledge has been tested against it for a thousand years. It means the book is younger than the tradition, and honest people should say which one they are citing.

jaimini — a real system with an unclear author

The Jaimini approach reads the same chart in a genuinely different way. Where the standard system hangs everything on the planets, Jaimini works from the signs.

Its significators are not fixed — they are assigned by which planet sits at the highest degree, so they change from chart to chart. It uses arudha padas, a way of reading how something appears to the outside world rather than how it is. And its timing runs on sign-based cycles rather than Vimshottari.

Astrologers use it today, and it produces results that practitioners take seriously. The system is real.

The name is the problem. There is a well-known Jaimini in Indian intellectual history: the founder of the Mimamsa school of philosophy, usually placed around 400 BCE. Britannica has an entry on him. It does not mention astrology at all.

The astrological sutras carrying that name have never been securely dated by modern scholarship. Every confident date I could find traces back to practitioner tradition rather than to anyone who has examined the manuscripts. So: use the system if it works for you, and treat any firm century you are given as a guess wearing a suit.

the mathematicians underneath all of it

It is easy to talk about sages and forget that none of this floats free of arithmetic. Somebody had to be able to say where the planets actually were.

Aryabhata, born 476, wrote the Aryabhatiya. He had the length of the sidereal month — the time the Moon takes to return to the same star — as 27.32166 days. The modern figure is 27.321661. He was also, in a lost work, one of the first to start the day at midnight rather than sunrise.

Brahmagupta, born 598, working at Bhillamala in what is now Rajasthan, wrote the Brahmasphutasiddhanta in 628. It is the book that defined zero as what you get when you subtract a number from itself, and set out rules for negative numbers by calling them debts against positive property.

Around 771 it was carried to Baghdad and translated into Arabic. That is the road by which Indian astronomy and Indian numerals reached the Islamic world, and from there Europe. The digits you are reading this in took that route.

Every chart your astrologer draws rests on their arithmetic, not on anyone's authority.

why the honest version is the better story

There is a temptation in every tradition to push the dates back as far as they will go, as if age were the same thing as truth. It isn't. And the real history is more interesting than the flattened one.

What actually happened: an indigenous system built on the Moon met Greek geometry, absorbed it rather than surrendering to it, argued with itself for centuries, lost books, recovered them, edited them heavily, and kept the parts that survived contact with reality.

That is how any body of knowledge survives. It is what happened to medicine, to astronomy, to law.
